As you may already know, Microsoft is ending all support and updates for Windows 7 on January 14, 2020. If you have not upgraded to Windows 10 yet, this deadline probably makes you uncomfortable, however, there are many points to consider before going into panic mode.

Windows 10 has been in use since July 2015 and now has a growing user base. In fact, many businesses have already successfully incorporated Windows 10 into their networks and are reporting an increased level of productivity. Older computers that are currently running Windows 7 have probably slowed down due to increased demands, but Windows 10 installed on a properly configured system runs very efficiently. Of all the benefits of Windows 10, none is more immediate than an improvement in operating speed. Windows 10 uses memory and processor power very efficiently. You’ll notice a single application hang doesn’t cause the whole computer to lock-up (even though application hangs are rare with mainstream software).

What are some other differences? While Windows 7 has an easy to use interface that is very familiar to Windows users and Windows 8 completely rehauled that interface, Windows 10 gives the user the best of both. The Windows 10 interface differs a little from Windows 7, but is very similar (unlike Windows 8) and you will still find that recognizable Start menu.

A new added feature to Windows 10 is touch screen functionality. While most businesses will not be utilizing this as their primary mode of usage, it is still useful for some tasks (and let’s face it, it’s pretty cool). Users can experience the touch screen feature on both laptops and desktops if a touch-screen monitor is used.

The great news about Windows 10 is that Microsoft plans to release feature updates twice a year and intends to keep supporting the operating system into the near future. If that plan works out, that means you shouldn’t need to buy a new version a few years from now.

There are a few points to consider prior to your upgrade to Windows 10. Any old software on your computer may need to be upgraded in order to be compatible (although most software which runs on Windows 7 will still run on Windows 10). You should check your printers, scanners and other peripherals to see if they are compatible with Windows 10. The good news is that the vast majority of printers built in recent years have Windows 10 compatible drivers that are already available.

Unfortunately, upgrading old equipment to Windows 10 is not always the most cost-effective option for your business. An in-place upgrade may work, but oftentimes it does not go smoothly so a complete rebuild of the system is ultimately required. We can install Windows 10 and all the applicable software to make your computer feel like new. Keep in mind though, labor and time can often be more expensive than a new computer purchase. Since computer hardware costs are on the rise and current market conditions make the trend likely to continue, you may want to consider ordering new hardware before further price increases occur.

There are several benefits to a new computer purchase versus an upgrade of an older system. First and foremost, new systems have faster processors. The CPU (Central Processing Unit or simply the processor) is the main chip in a computer that is responsible for carrying out all tasks. A new computer will also contain more memory, which will better support the way that most users navigate between numerous browser tabs and application windows. In terms of which is more efficient, a Solid State Drive (SSD) or a Hard Disk Drive (HDD), we recommend an SSD which is much faster than a HDD. This is because SSD’s do not have moving parts and store data in microchips. SSD’s are faster, lighter and less bulky. SSD prices are also more reasonable than a couple of years ago, which makes them the go-to choice for laptops because it allows them to be transported safely in sleep or hibernation. They can be ordered in desktops as well if that is preferred. If you purchase a new Dell computer, you will benefit from Dell’s excellent support and warranty services. If something goes wrong, the repair is quick, to keep disturbances to a minimum and restore stability and productivity in your production environment. There are multiple levels of support offered to fit your business needs. If budget is a concern, contact us and let Dell Financial Services help you make that change today spreading the cost over time.

Increase productivity further: Consider larger or multiple monitors to boost user performance and comfort. Add external monitors to a small/light laptop for in-office use. Declutter with multi-monitor stands.
